Two drivers, Emmanuel Okomeyin, 27, and Anyia Austine, 30, have been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to kidnap their employer’s wife. The accused, whose residential addresses were not provided, are facing two counts of conspiracy and attempted kidnap. According to the police prosecutor, Michael Unah, the accused allegedly attempted to kidnap their employer’s wife, Mrs Ijeoma Ezeokafor, from her residence. Unah said the accused committed the offences on October 26, 2018, around 1pm at 1A Dora Crescent, Ajah, Lagos. He added that the duo conspired to kidnap Ijeoma with the hope of collecting the sum of N20m as ransom from her husband.

Unah stated, “The police got the information from an undisclosed source that the accused were planning to kidnap their employer’s wife at her residence in order to collect N20m ransom from her husband. “A team of policemen went to the residence of the complainant and let the cat out of the bag and the accused were handed over to the police.” The charges read, “That you, Emmanuel Okomeyin and Anyia Austine, on October 26, 2018, around 1pm in Ajah, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; kidnapping, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. “That you, Emmanuel Okomeyin and Anyia Austine, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did attempt to kidnap one Ijeoma Ezeokafor, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 406 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.” The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Fashola, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties each in like sum. Fashola said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court. In addition, he said the sureties must be blood relations of the accused and also reside within the court’s jurisdiction. The magistrate adjourned the case till February 25, 2019, for mention.

In November, police men in Lagos state have apprehended two suspected kidnappers who planned to abduct their employer’s wife. It was gatthered that the suspects – Austine Anya and Emmanuel Okemayin were employed as private drivers to the family of Mrs. Ijeoma Eze-Okafor, but they didn’t know they were employing kidnappers.

The two drivers were said to have arranged with some of their gang members to kidnap Mrs. Ijeoma for ransom but they were unfortunate as they were caught in the act by divine intervention. It was gathered that the suspects contacted one Awosola Adewale, gave him money to contact a native doctor and source for the arms for the operation while they still worked in the house as drivers in order to perfect the wicked act.

This was confirmed by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Imohimi Edgal and the three suspects were paraded at the State Command on Monday.

The police boss said that directives were given to the FSARS operatives to infiltrate the camp and play along with them. He said the suspects requested for arms, ammunition and vehicle for the operation while the suspects on their own sent the photograph of the target, details of her vehicle and other information to their new partners not knowing they were dealing with policemen.

He said that during interrogation, it was discovered that the two drivers were employed to drive the target and her husband respectively while the third suspect was given N10,000 to engage the services of a native doctor that will protect them after the operation. The suspects confessed and claimed that they had planned to kidnap the target because she was wicked to them. Mr. Edgal said that the suspects will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.

According to reports, one Babatunde Olagesin is currently cooling his heels in police custody after he allegedly hacked his father, Taiwo Olagesin, to death with a cutlass. City Round learnt that a fight broke out between the father and son on Monday, May 6, 2019 in their residence in the Ijoko area of Ogun State.

It was gathered that the suspect had wanted to leave home for Oshodi, Lagos State, around 6am, but was prevented by his father, who insisted that he (son) would accompany him somewhere. It was learnt that Taiwo locked up the doors leading outside the premises to keep his son inside.

When it appeared he could not restrict his son, Taiwo reportedly brought out a cutlass to scare him. Undeterred by the weapon, Babatunde was said to have struggled to collect it from his father. In the process, he reportedly used the weapon to cut his father in the stomach.

It was also gathered that neigbours alerted the police from the Agbado division to the incident and Babatunde was arrested. A police source disclosed to City Round that the suspect in his statement claimed to have killed his father by accident, adding that the case had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

The source said, “The boy had a misunderstanding with his father. He said he wanted to go to Oshodi to ‘hustle’ (make money), but his father said he needed to follow him somewhere. The suspect claimed that his father brought out a cutlass to scare him and locked the doors leading outside.

“They started struggling with each other to get hold of the cutlass. He claimed he did not know when the cutlass pierced his father’s stomach. Before people could separate them, the father had slumped and started bleeding. He gave up the ghost before he could get medical care at the hospital. The suspect was about 30 years old.”

The deceased’s neighbours approached by our correspondent declined comments on the incident, saying the matter was being investigated by the police. But a resident, who gave his name only as Seun, said the tragedy could have been averted if Babatunde’s mother was at home that day.

He said, “I was not around when the incident happened. It was when I returned from work in the evening that I learnt about it. From what I learnt, he always had problems with his father. His mother who usually cautioned him was not at home on the day the incident happened. The father had asked him to follow him somewhere but he insisted that he was going to Oshodi to work, which led to a fight. He hacked his father to death with a cutlass.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that the case would soon be charged to court. He said, “The suspect said he wanted to go somewhere but his father did not allow him. According to him, his father brought out a cutlass and while they were both trying to get hold of it, it mistakenly cut the man in the stomach.”

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Imo State Police Command has reportedly arrested one Nneka Donatus, a 27-year-old single mother who allegedly sold her one-day-old baby girl.

A civil servant at the state Ministry of Women Affairs, Ujunwa Udechukwu, 40; and one Nneoma Onwusereaka, 37 were also arrested.

According to Punch, the two women allegedly conspired with the single mother to sell the baby to a couple.

Speaking to Southern City News at the police headquarters in Owerri on Thursday, May 9, 2019, the mother of the baby, confessed that she used part of the money to buy a phone, slippers, and wrapper for herself, adding that she wanted to use the remaining money to start a business.

Having given birth to five children already, Donatus said she could not keep the child and that was the reason she sold him.

“I sold my baby girl for N600,000 and used N15,000 from the money to buy a phone, wrapper and slippers and transported myself back home.

“I asked Nneoma Onwusereaka and her husband, who had the balance to use it to start a business for me. I have five children already and I am separated from my former husband.”

According to Punch, a civil servant was arrested in connection with the crime said that received N10,000 for connecting the buyer with the seller.

A police officer who confirmed the story also said that while the single mother put to bed on March 28, the day old baby was sold for N600,000 on March 29 at Ezinachi in the Okigwe LGA of Imo State, Punch report.

The anonymous police officer added that the suspects would be arraigned at the end of investigation.
