Solskjaer was forced into a change in first-half injury time when Lingard, who had gone down minutes earlier with what appeared to be a muscle tweak, was replaced by Alexis Sanchez. Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keeping his fingers crossed the pair don’t face extended spells out. He said: “Jesse and Anthony give us something, let’s hope they’re not too serious. They’re muscle injuries, so we’ll just have to wait a couple of days.

“They [PSG] had the momentum after the first goal and controlled the game. You could see that we hadn’t played at this level for a while and we will have to learn. “It was an experience that can go either way, it’s not going to be a season defining one, it’s one we have to learn from.”

Goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe left Manchester United with a mountain to climb as Paris Saint-Germain won 2-0 at Old Trafford in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg and Paul Pogba was sent off. PSG struck twice in seven minutes before the hour, Kimpembe volleying home a corner before Mbappe finished a low cross from ex-United player Angel Di Maria to condemn United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to his first defeat in charge.

Things became even worse for the home side with the seconds ticking away as Pogba was dismissed after a foul on Dani Alves, meaning he misses the second leg in Paris. United had been quickly out of the blocks, Marcus Rashford’s attempt to play Jesse Lingard through thwarted by an interception, but the first real threat came from Di Maria, whose curling shot after six minutes went wide of David De Gea’s far post.
