Buhari vs Atiku: Why INEC is relocating polling units inec1 300x180

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it will relocate some polling units at areas believed to be vulnerable to security challenges in Zamfara State.

The Residents Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the state, Hajiya Asmau Maikudi, said this at a press conference in Gusau on Wednesday.

The REC said the electoral officers at the local government offices of such areas were meeting with all stakeholders to see the possibilities of relocating those polling units to other places where security was guaranteed.

She said as soon as all arrangements were concluded, the commission would notify the electorate of the affected areas where to cast their votes.

She said the commission would appoint personnel that would guide the electorate to new the polling units.

She maintain that no eligible voter would be left out in the electoral process, as all measures were being put in place to also include those living with disabilities.

Asmau said those with any form of disability, old age, pregnant women and nursing mothers would be given special considerations during the election, NAN reports.

She said all the 14 local governments in the state were affected except for Gumi and Bakura LGAs.

INEC admits COVID-19 truncated Nigeria’s electoral process mahmood yakubu 1

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has assured Nigerians that COVID-19 won’t truncate Nigeria’s democracy and the electoral process.

Yakubu spoke in Abuja at the INEC’s first virtual meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Saturday.

The INEC Chairman, however, admitted that the virus disrupted INEC’s activities like other national institutions.

He said: “For instance, further engagements with the National Assembly and stakeholders on electoral reform and the conduct of some off-season elections have to be suspended because of the global health emergency.

“Happily, the PTF has issued guidelines on protective measures for the gradual restoration of normalcy nationwide.

”On that basis, the commission recently released its own policy on conducting elections in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The commission is convinced that electoral activities can resume, but in full compliance with the advisory issued by health authorities.

“Consequently, the Governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States scheduled for Sept. 19 and Oct. 10 respectively, will proceed as planned.
