Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says his Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has proved he deserves to manage a “top club”.

Solskjaer is currently only in charge at United on a caretaker basis, but has enjoyed remarkable success since replacing Jose Mourinho just before Christmas. United looked out of contention for Champions League qualification at that stage but are now fourth in the table, having won eight and drawn one of their nine Premier League games since Solskjaer was appointed. Asked what he thought of Solskjaer’s United tenure so far, Klopp told Sky : “I am a manager myself and I know that we are not magicians.

“It is not like we can come in and say ‘you are not good, but I can make you really good’! But we are blessed with really good players around us and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is doing a brilliant . It is all about bringing out the potential of the team, improving the quality, and that is what he obviously did and that makes him a manager for a top club. I didn’t know him, I met him one time – I think – last year at a training game in La Manga, where he was with the Norwegian team, and so we had a little chat. He is a nice fellow, that is for sure, and what he did so far is obviously brilliant.”

United have adopted more buccaneering tactics since Solskjaer took charge but Klopp does not think it would be wise to try and second-guess how the home team will approach Sunday’s game. “We will see how they play against us,” he said. “I think they are able to play different ways. They are much more front-footed for sure now, that is clear, but their counter attacks are a massive threat, especially when (Anthony) Martial and (Jesse) Lingard get fit again. It is not only one thing they are good at. There are a few ways where you can at least give them a few questions they don’t have easy answers for – but it will be a very physical game and very demanding for both teams.”

Rangers boss, Steven Gerrard, has admitted he is aware of speculation linking him with the Derby County post.

However, the former Liverpool captain insists he is focused on the new season with the Scottish club.

Gerrard is believed to be Derby’s first choice, to replace Frank Lampard, who is expected to take the Chelsea this week.

But Gerrard has stressed he has no intention of leaving “one of the biggest clubs you can manage”.

He told Sky : “Yes I’m aware of it but there’s nothing to say on it.

“I’m very happy here, it’s a privilege to be the Rangers manager. My focus is on the up and coming season.

“It’s very similar to when there’s noise around players. I ask the players to stay focused on the job and that is what I will continue to do. There is nothing really to add to that.”

Asked if he wanted to re-affirm his commitment to Rangers, Gerrard added: “Do I have to do that for the sake of you?

“Nothing has changed in my mind. I was very lucky and appreciative of the opportunity I got 12 months ago.

“I’m delighted to be at Rangers, managing one if the biggest clubs you can manage, so nothing has changed in terms of my focus.”

2019 fifa women’s world cup: all african teams eliminated 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup: All African teams eliminated worldcup france2019 1

Cameroon, the last African country standing at the Women’s World Cup, have been eliminated following a 3-0 defeat to England on Sunday.

The English ladies, who won all three group stage fixtures, completely dominated the Indomitable Lionesses.

Steph Houghton opened scoring from an indirect free-kick before Ellen White made it 2-0 late into added time in the first half.

Cameroon came out for the second half and pulled a goal back which was cancelled for offside before England sealed victory.

This result means that all three African representatives at the tournament have now quit the tournament.

Just yesterday, Nigeria lost 3-0 to Germany in a one-sided affair.
