The Peoples Democratic Party Monitoring Group (PDPMG) has raised alarm over an alleged plot to arrest and detain PDP chieftains in Akwa Ibom State.

According to the PDPMG, the plot is being masterminded by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Nsima Ekere; and a former of the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The PDPMG claimed that Ekere and Akpabio had hired some miscreants to foment trouble in the state during today’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

It claimed that the arrest of the miscreants would be stage-managed such that they would make purported confessional statements implicating PDP chieftains in Akwa Ibom State.

It named those to be implicated as PDP National Legal Adviser, Emmanuel Enoidem; the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Works, Mr Ephraim Inyang; Senator Bassey Albert; and the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State of Assembly, Onofiok Luke.

The PDPMG said, “Available intelligence has revealed that this wicked, barbaric and devilish plot is being spearheaded by an aide of Mr Ekere and these thugs brought in from outside the state to execute the aforementioned plot are already camped in Akwa Ibom preparatory to the execution of the task they have been assigned to undertake. We want to state categorically, without fear or contradiction, that no amount of intimidation, threat, plot to arrest, detain, frame up or assassinate any PDP chieftain or high-ranking member of the party in the state will weaken the resolve of all PDP members in the 31 local government areas of the state to support, vote for and defend the wishes and aspirations of Akwa Ibom people who are resolute and unwavering in their resolve to support the second term bid of Governor Udom Emmanuel towards consolidating on the gains of his industrialisation policy and the prevailing peace and security witnessed in the state since May 29, 2015, contrary to what was obtainable in the state from 2007 to 2015.”

However, in swift reaction to the allegations, Sen. Akpabio’s media aide, Anietie Ekong, said the allegation against his principal were unfounded saying, “It follows a familiar pattern of crying wolf since the defection of Senator Akpabio to the APC. It is nonsensical for anyone to claim that Senator Akpabio held a meeting with unnamed security agencies in the state.”

He added that it was irresponsible of the PDP to drag President Muhammadu Buhari’s name into the allegation.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is a responsible leader who was committed to the well-being of all Nigerians and could not have given any instructions on innocent Nigerians to be maimed and killed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party has called for the release of its presidential campaign spokesman  in Kogi State, Mr Austin Okai. Okai was said to have been abducted on Friday evening by armed thugs allegedly  working for the  All Progressives Congress (APC).

PDP vs APC: Atiku heads to Supreme Court over INEC server

pdp vs apc: atiku heads to supreme court over inec server PDP vs APC: Atiku heads to Supreme Court over INEC server c5ff686f atiku

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to challenge, at the Supreme Court, the dismissal of their application to be granted access to inspect the central server allegedly used by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to transmit results of the last general .

Recall that the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal had earlier ruled in a unanimous decision that the request could not be granted since the issue of whether such central server existed or not, is already a subject of controversy in the substantive petition that is challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

Reacting to the Tribunal’s ruling, a senior member of the Atiku and PDP’s legal team, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, told Journalists: “The nation was looking forward to this ruling and it is one that is very pivotal to this matter.

“The Electoral Act itself empowers the tribunal to grant access such as this to the petitioners in order to institute and maintain a petition, and that is what we are asking for.

“Somehow, at this stage, the court has ruled. But definitely this is a matter we want to take higher to the Supreme Court to challenge this ruling because we strongly feel that section 151 of the Electoral Act entitles us to have access to these materials.”

On its part, INEC, through its lawyer, Mr. Usman Uztaz, SAN, said it was satisfied with the ruling.

“These are issues to be tried during the hearing, you cannot try them in piecemeal”, INEC’s lawyer told newsmen.

Oshiomhole speaks on ‘becoming new godfather’ of Edo politics

oshiomhole speaks on ‘becoming new godfather’ of edo politics Oshiomhole speaks on ‘becoming new godfather’ of Edo politics Oshiomhole2 1024x576 3

National Chairman of the All Progressives , APC, Adams Oshiomhole has denied accusations of perpetuating himself as the new godfather of Edo politics.

Oshiomhole made the denial on Sunday while fielding questions from State correspondents after leading some APC members to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking on the latest crisis rocking the party in Edo state, the APC National Chairman challenged his accusers to come up with proofs.

He said, “What is the evidence? It’s all about accusation. They have to give you the particulars of that godfatherism. What’s the evidence? I am a democrat. That I accept the credit, not only that, I fought godfatherism”

Oshiomhole boasted that he did not only destroy the concept of godfathers in Edo politics but also launched the one man one vote campaign to fight against rigging anywhere in .

He said, “By the special grace of God under PDP with Anenih alive, and at his best, I won all the 18 local government areas and I won 95 percent of the total votes cast in my second term election.

“So, Edo people know me and I know them. I don’t need short-cut to sustain my position in the system. But you know that there is nobody in Nigeria who is not open to accusations. The important thing is that he who accuses should give you proofs.“

The former Edo State also condemned the use of few members of the State House of Assembly to elect leadership of the House, without the consent of majority of the members.

“You know that what happened in Edo was that they did not publicize a proclamation letter, the members were not informed, they did the inauguration at 9:30 pm in what in a Supreme Court judgement they call nocturnal hours. Business of parliament are done transparently; they are not secret cult. Now you have 24 member House, 19 members protested.

“You have six and you carry people in their short knickers, even in the House they have rules, the dress code.

“So, it happened in Edo, it has happened in Bauchi. Like Edo, Bauchi used the minority of 10 to go and proclaim the House and lockout 20 APC members and got those 10 people to elect, exactly the way Edo did with 6 and then co opted other 3 people to become 9 and even at that, it is nonsense.

“For us these are completely illegal. And that is why we said so. If it is wrong, it is wrong whether it is done by APC or by PDP.

“I believe by the end of the day, the solution is return to the rule of law. Let’s properly follow the law; let the parliament do what they have to do but people have the right to lobby for people they want and whom they prefer. This is also legitimate.”

He called on the states to emulate the example of the National Assembly where the contestants and party officials lobbied to be elected as leaders of the Legislature, culminating in the election of leaders through the secret ballot.

According to him, “We have an APC Senator, who in spite of all the efforts invested by all our leaders including Mr. President, insisted that he will contest.

“The law allowed him so, we couldn’t stop him. The President could have said ok SSS please find excuse to invite him for questioning the day before; put him away until the elections are over. But we won’t do that.

“That is not the change we promised. The change we promised is to try to improve in the ways public institutions are managed and how rules are implemented. I believe that it will be resolved.”
