The Independent National Electoral Commission, , has reacted to the call by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to reject results of last Saturday’s and National Assembly elections across the country.

Recall that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had rejected earliest results being announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

INEC, reacting to allegations by the PDP, rejected the call for redress on the presidential results.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of INEC, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, while addressing journalists in Abuja, said there was no basis for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to reject the results of last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections across the country.

Oyekanmi said: “The commission is doing the right thing and would not want to join issues with anyone or party.

“The results being announced are not full of errors, they are valid. We have not concluded the release of the results. We have just released some and we still have results of other states to declare.

“So, we will continue with what we are doing successfully and as expected of us. What we are doing is the right thing to be done.”

Meanwhile, the candidate of the All Progressives , APC, Muhammadu Buhari, is currently leading in the presidential conducted on Saturday.

Results obtained from states collation centers by DAILY POST showed that President Buhari is coasting to victory as against his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, challenger, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

While Atiku has gained more votes, defeating the incumbent President with wide margins in South-east and South-South states, Buhari himself has gathered great momentum in the North.

INEC admits COVID-19 truncated Nigeria’s electoral process mahmood yakubu 1

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, , Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has assured Nigerians that COVID-19 won’t truncate Nigeria’s democracy and the electoral process.

Yakubu spoke in Abuja at the INEC’s first virtual meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Saturday.

The INEC Chairman, however, admitted that the virus disrupted INEC’s activities like other national institutions.

He said: “For instance, further engagements with the National Assembly and stakeholders on electoral reform and the conduct of some off-season elections have to be suspended because of the global health emergency.

“Happily, the PTF has issued guidelines on protective measures for the gradual restoration of normalcy nationwide.

”On that basis, the commission recently released its own policy on conducting elections in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The commission is convinced that electoral activities can resume, but in full compliance with the advisory issued by health authorities.

“Consequently, the Governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States scheduled for Sept. 19 and Oct. 10 respectively, will proceed as planned.
