The President Muhammadu government on Wednesday stirred what can be described as a hornet’s nest when its Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, revealed that plans were at the advanced stage to return toll gate on the federal highways, stressing that there was no law that stopped the government from having toll gate on federal roads.

Fashola, flanked by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said, “There is no reason why we can’t toll, there was a policy of the government to abolish tolls or as it were, dismantle toll plaza but there is no law that prohibits tolling in today.

“We expect to return toll plazas, We have concluded their designs of what they will look like, what materials they will be rebuilt with, what new considerations must go into them. What we are looking at now and trying to conclude is how the bank end runs.”

This disclosure, which was the high point of the press briefing at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting, came fifteen years after the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo scrapped toll gates across the country.

It also came at a time when President Buhari had declared that the federal government will not inflict additional hardship on citizens, rather it will keep seeking ways to ameliorate their sufferings and create a more enabling environment for everyone to thrive.

“I want to assure you that, as an administration, we have no intention of inflicting any additional hardship on Nigerians,’’ Buhari had told the new executive of Trade Union  led by its President, Quadri Olaleye, at the State .

As is to be expected, this planned reintroduction of toll gates on the nation’s highways has started generating reactions from some Nigerians across board, including the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

PDP Blows Hot

The Peoples Democratic Party, in a statement issued Wednesday by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said “such insensitive idea, in the midst of excruciating economic hardship and high costs of living occasioned by the harsh policies of the Buhari administration, is completely ill-conceived and anti-people.”

The party insisted that the planned toll gates at best, “amounts to executive bullying which cannot be justified under any guise as it will lead to more increase in costs of goods and services across the country”.

It added, “Only recently, President Buhari approved the increase of Value Added Tax, VAT, from 5% to 7.2% despite outcry by Nigerians, who are also being made to pay exorbitant tariffs for electricity and other essential services.

“Since President Buhari came into in 2015, his administration had continued to increase prices and impose all manner of levies on Nigerians which proceeds are being frittered by the cabal in the presidency leading to a bleeding and despondency among the citizenry.

“The PDP says that instead of putting more pressure on already impoverished Nigerians by introducing toll gates at this point in time, President Buhari should exert himself, seek ways of creating wealth out of the abundant resources at the disposal of his administration or make haste to surrender the reign of governance to more competent hands.

“Nigerians could recall that the PDP administration, in keeping with our determination to ensure the wellbeing and economic prosperity of our citizens, dismantled toll gates, cut tax profiles and applied our energies towards wealth creation.

“It is therefore certain that if our nation were under a PDP administration, as desired by Nigerians, competent hands would have been on the deck to proffer ways to create wealth for governance instead of turning our citizens into vassals who are overburdened by heavy taxes.”

Nigerians Vent Too

Since the story broke, Nigerians have taken to social media platforms available to them, particularly Opera News comment section and , to air their views regarding Fashola’s disclosure. These views are presented below:

Nigerians warned to stop drinking garri 20200119 022851

The Director of Public Health, Enugu State, Dr Boniface Okolo, has cautioned Nigerians against the consumption of cassava flakes, otherwise known as garri to avoid contacting Lassa fever.

Okolo, who gave the warning in an interview with News Agency of (NAN), on Saturday in Enugu, said the rats that caused the disease were mostly in contact with Nigerian most popular staple food ‘garri,’ a cassava product.

He added that it was necessary to discourage consumption of soaked garri since it did not require boiled water.

Okolo noted that boiled water could go a long way to kill bacteria caused by pest or rodents in garri.

“It is better that the cassava flakes called garri is used for ‘eba’, because of the use of hot water.

“We in the state health ministry are waging total war against rodents through sensitisation, that is what we are doing to ensure we do not have victim of Lassa fever in the state.

“We are also sensitising the public to ensure that their fruits and raw vegetables are properly washed if they must be consumed them raw and cook to the appropriate temperature.

“The best practices for food storage should be encouraged to prevent epidemic.

”We should always make sure that we use air-tight clean plastic containers to preserve our foodstuff to avoid lassa fever and other diseases,” he said.

Amotekun: Fani-Kayode explodes as Miyetti Allah tells Buhari to arrest Yoruba leaders immediately Femi Fani Kayode

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has dared the Muhammadu -led government to arrest the Yoruba leaders promoting the establishment of the new security outfit, Amotekun in the South West.

Fani-Kayode said this while reacting to the call made by the National President General of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Abdullahi Bodejo to arrest the Yoruba leaders endorsing Amotekun.

DAILY POST had reported that Bodejo said FG should not just stop at banning the outfit but should arrestthose involved in making decisions for its creation with immediate effect.

He said: “If you say you set up Amotekun to protect your region, what about the Northern , what about the Southeast and the South-South and other places that don’t have that kind of thing. is one; everything is one, unless they want to divide the country.

“I know some of their leaders have good hearts, but others have evil hearts, and those are the ones coming up with this agenda that the Fulani can’t do this and the Fulani can’t do that; all these things are happening because of Fulani; they are just against the Fulani.

“I support 100 percent the federal government banning it; and the leaders should be arrested. It is a deliberate plot against the Fulani.”

Reacting to the development, Fani-Kayode in a series of tweets on his official page, on Saturday, said the Youruba leaders were ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of thier loved ones, children and for the future generations of their people.

He wrote: “Arrest Yoruba leaders who support Amotekun”- Miyetti Allah.

“Go ahead, arrest us and ignite a fire. Do your worst and make heroes and martyrs out of us. We are ready to sacrifice ALL for the freedom of our loved ones & children & for the future generations of our people.

“The struggle for secession in 1967, the Nzeogwu coup of Jan. 15th 1966 and the Orkar coup of April 22 1990, which all aimed at breaking the Islamic North’s political stranglehold coupled with the centrifugal ethnic nationalism of today, have all been abundantly vindicated.

“There is no realistic prospect of working, in equal partnership, with the Islamic North towards any shared enlightened vision of the future. It is time for us to go our separate ways.

“In as much as the control of one’s own destiny is the pre-condition for progress, a conflict with the Islamic North is inevitable if the South truly desires to successfully reform itself.”

Recall that Governors in the South West region had established and inaugurated the security outfit to curb the menace of herdsmen attacks in their region.

However, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami had said the security outfit is illegal.
