Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked as their manager.

The Argentine spent five years in charge of the North London side.

Pochettino led Spurs to top-four finishes in four of his five seasons in charge, as well as their first Champions final in the 2018/19 campaign.

However, they have won just five matches this season and chairman Daniel Levy said a change had to be made in the “club’s best interests”.

An official club statement read: “We were extremely reluctant to make this change and it is not a decision the board has taken lightly, nor in haste.

“Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.

“It falls to the board to make the difficult decisions – this one made more so given the many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff – but we do so in the club’s best interests.

“Mauricio and his coaching staff will always be part of our history. I have the utmost admiration for the manner in which he dealt with the difficult times away from a home ground whilst we built the new stadium and for the warmth and positivity he brought to us.

“I should like to thank him and his coaching staff for all they have contributed. They will always be welcome here.

“We have a talented squad. We need to re-energise and look to deliver a positive season for our supporters.”

EPL: Rashford speaks on being compared with Cristiano Ronaldo 20191214 115024

Manchester United striker, Marcus Rashford, has played down Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s comparison of him and Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting he still has a long way to go to match the Portugal superstar.

Solskjaer said it was “easy” to compare Rashford and Ronaldo, after the England international scored his 13th goal in his last 14 games, in the 2-1 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Rashford has also reached 50 United goals in fewer games than Ronaldo.

“As a forward player ever since I’ve come through, they always compare you with forwards that have been in the past and it’s something that you don’t really have much of an input on.

“All you do is try to do your best on the pitch and then people outside do the talking about it.

“It’s just a thing people like to do with forwards so it’s obviously nice, definitely a compliment. I understand how far I’ve got left to go to reach the heights they reached so I am very clear-minded and just focused on myself,” Rashford said according to ESPN.

EPL: Guardiola sends message to Arteta over taking Arsenal job Pep Guardiola 1024x683

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has said Mikel Arteta must decide whether he believes he is ready to step into management.

Arteta has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, following the sacking of Unai Emery in November.

The Spaniard was a candidate to replace Arsene Wenger in 2018, but the Gunners settled for Emery.

Guardiola appointed Arteta as his assistant in 2016 and the club allowed him to speak to Arsenal 18 months ago, while there was interest from Everton and Newcastle in the last year.

“You can be a 45-year-old and believe you’re not ready [to become a manager] and 35 and believe you’re ready. Only he knows.

“I’ve spoken about the situation a few weeks ago, there’s no more to add. I said two weeks ago, he’s got two weeks more experience, so he’s ready,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday.
