A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo, the capital on Thursday, remanded three people for allegedly involving in malpractice during West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate (WASSCE).

The defendants were; Taofeek Badmus Busari, Adeyinka Afolabi Adeoye and Sulaiman Isah.

According to the charge sheet, the defendants, and many others presently at large were said to have committed the alleged offense on 17th September, during WASSCE examination by licking exams questions to candidates through online platforms, thereby aided cheating as well as causing disorderliness.

It stated that the offence was contrary to and punishable under section 1( d) and punishable under section 1 (2) (c) of the examination malpractice Act .1999.

The trio, however, pleaded not guilty to the four -count charge, bordering on conspiracy, breach of peace and examination malpractice leveled against them, as defence counsels, Kehinde Ajibola, Dolapo Awoyemi and Temitope Ayodele, jointly applied for bail for the defendants in the most liberal and affordable terms.

Meanwhile, the Department of State Security(DSS) prosecutor, opposed the bail application by urging the court to remand the accused persons for the purpose of concluding investigation.

The Magistrate, Mrs Adijat Oloyede, therefore, ordered that the defendants should be remanded at correctional centre .

The case was then adjourned till January 9, 2020 for hearing.

ASUU threatens nationwide strike, gives reason ASUU logo 1

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has threatened to embark on nationwide strike soon.

ASUU national president, Biodun Ogunyemi, declared this on Wednesday after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at the Federal University of Technology, Minna

Ogunyemi said the union shall activate its standing resolution of “No pay, No Work’ if federal government makes any attempt to stop their salaries over Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

This was disclosed in a series of post on ASUU’s official Twitter handle.

The post read: “Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the federal government makes any attempt to stop salaries of their members over Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

“ASUU national president, Biodun Ogunyemi, who declared this yesterday, after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at the Federal University of Technology, Minna from 7th-8th, December, , said the union shall activate its standing resolution of “No pay, No Work.”

“He noted that the union is shocked that the OAGF said IPPIS is meant to comply with global best practices when they cannot tell Nigerians or any other country where IPPIS is extended to the universities as one of the best practices.”

On 5th December Premiumtimesngreported that the governing council of Ekiti State University (EKSU) have sacked over 1000 staff after a staff audit exercise.

In the report, they shared a statement released by the University’s governing council.

Incase you missed it, the PRESS RELEASE partly reads:

In a release by the University Public Relations Officer, the Governing Council noted the findings contained in the Report of the External Staff Auditors that:

(1) over 600 workers were employed irregularly against university regulations within the period 2016-2018 thereby causing a major personnel disalignment and skyrocketing of the university wage bill by about 100% within two years. The situation was so bad in the university that it was the monthly contributions of members of staff who belong to some Cooperative, Thrift and Credit Societies in the University that were partly and on a monthly basis used by the then university administration to pay the salaries of those that were irregularly employed and who interestingly refused to join any of the Cooperative, Thrifts and Credit Societies.

(2) 228 members of staff could not produce/show evidence of Primary School Leaving Certificate

(3) there were some ghost workers whose names were found on the university pay roll without being on the university nominal role.

(4) some members of staff presented falsified birth and educational certificates.

(5) some of the members of staff lacked the required basic educational qualification.

(6) some members of staff were illegally retained in the university services after having been due to retire.

(7) there are other cases of over aged staff.

(8) some others lacked the required basic educational qualification.

Consequently after due consideration of the issues involved, and the overall best interest of the university in being properly positioned for local relevance and global competitiveness, the Governing Council of Ekiti State University has directed that those who were found to have fallen into the categories listed in 1-8 above be disengaged of their appointments forthwith in accordance with the university regulations.

Some Nigerians have taken Twitter to react to the development. Most of their views were hilarious.

I remember that year on the 2nd of January when my dad lost his former job. It was really a sad and traumatic experience for the family, but thank God for God.

I pray God consoles the affected staffs regardless their attitude towards the students. Amen
