GOOD NEWS: finally Coronavirus cure is out!

Human testing is set to start very soon.

First Batch of Coronavirus Vaccine Has Been Shipped, Human Testing Starts

  • In the race to find cure for the deadly coronavirus, a biotech company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts has announced that the first batch of vaccine has been shipped for human testing.
  • The first vial of cure was sent to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Bethesda, Maryland.
  • Moderna Therapeutics was able to come up with a vaccine.
  • Human testing is expected to commence as early as April.

In the race to create a vaccine for the deadly coronavirus that has infected numerous countries worldwide, a biotech company called Moderna Therapeutics, has announced the shipment of the first batch of coronavirus vaccine. This development was made 42 days after Chinese scientists released the genetic sequence of the virus that’s now called SARs-CoV-2.

In a report written by Time, Moderna sent its first coronavirus vial to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. This institution will prepare the vaccine and conduct testing on human volunteers by April.

The report also said that the NIH scientists will be testing two viruses simultaneously. Experts added that they have been already testing an anti-viral drug called “remdesivir” for patients with Ebola. The remdesivir vaccine has been injected to a SARs-CoV-2 patient. This trial was the first drug to be tested in treating COVID-19.

The first patient who volunteered in this groundbreaking research is an American who was tested positive of coronavirus after boarding the Diamond Princess cruise ship. Additionally, other patients who were tested of the virus will also be part of the study.

Based on the preliminary study, remdesivir vaccine showed significant result when injected to animals that were infected with two related coronaviruses: one, the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARs); and two, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The scientists said human volunteers will be randomly picked to be injected either with the drug or a placebo for 10 days. There will be a series of blood tests, nose and throat swabs every two days of the drug testing, “to track the amount of virus ” in the volunteers’ bodies.

“Even if the drug shows some efficacy in keeping blood levels of SARs-CoV-2 from growing, it could help to contain (the) spread of the infection” the report in TIME, stated.

Scientists explained that they were able to develop the COVID-19 vaccine due to a “relatively new genetic method” that does not require huge samples of virus, compared to the previous process. They instead boosted that vaccine with this mRNA, a genetic material the was sourced from DNA that makes proteins. Moderna explained that they loaded the COVID-19 vaccine with mRNA and started creating the protein for “other immune cells to recognize” and mark the virus “for destruction”.

Moderna Therapeutics president Dr. Stephen Hoge explained that this type of protein is described like a software molecule in biology. The vaccine, he added, is likened to a software which will immediately be programmed in the body once it is injected. The mRNA forms proteins that can generate an “immune response” against the virus.

New Study Warns Of Brain Damages Linked To COVID-19

Published

By

A new study has found that infection with COVID-19 can lead to brain damages, including delirium and nerve damage, the study by researchers at University College London (UCL) showed on Wednesday.

According to the researchers, since COVID-19 broke out, there appeared to be a “concerning increase” of a rare brain inflammation known to be triggered by viral infections.

In the UCL study, nine COVID-19 patients with brain inflammation were diagnosed with a rare condition called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, which is typically seen in children and can affect both the brain and spinal cord.

They said that some of the 43 patients studied did not have respiratory symptoms.

Dr Ross Paterson, of UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, and joint first author on the study, was quoted by local media as saying that “we might not yet know what long-term damage COVID-19 can cause.”

COVID-19: FG To Convert Eligible Hospitals Nationwide To Sample Collection Sites

Published

By

The Federal Government has taken a decisive move to convert all “eligible” public and private hospitals nationwide to become COVID-19 sample collection sites.

This, according to the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, will require working with state governments and the National Primary Health Care and Development Agency (NPHCDA) to identify the facilities and space within them.

Ehanire made this known even as he stated that in the month of June alone, a total of 15,532 cases were confirmed from 74,580 tests, with 303 deaths on record.

The minister, who was speaking at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, on Monday, said it was the plan of the Ministry of Health to boost overall COVID-19 sample collection, by preparing all eligible public and private hospitals nationwide to become collection sites.

Besides identifying the facilities and space in their areas, the minister said the state governments and the NPHCDA, “will also conduct training for the personnel selected and supply both PPEs and sample collection kits, as well as the logistics to go around to recover test samples.”

He pointed out that the move will lead to better utilisation of available laboratory assets in the country, which are now capable of handling far more cases than they presently do.

He said: “If logistics around sample collection and delivery to testing sites are better organised, a lot more will be achieved. However, the more we test, the more confirmed cases we shall find, of which the vulnerable will have to be prioritized for admission to treatment centers, even if they are not yet showing symptoms.

“States will be encouraged to use all opportunities to isolate other asymptomatic cases who may not qualify for supervised self Isolation, for the period they are deemed to be infectious or are at risk of infecting the vulnerable. It will also mean scaling up treatment and Isolation centres in states and the logistics for managing them.”

On the increasing cases of COVID-19, the minister said in the month of June alone, a total of 15,532 cases were confirmed from 74,580 tests, with 303 deaths on record.

As of today 6th of July 2020, he stated that Nigeria has recorded a total of 28,711 confirmed COVID-19 cases, out of 152,952 tests conducted, of which 11,665 have been treated successfully and discharged; adding, “we have regrettably recorded 645 fatalities.”
