Swiss International Football Federation (FIFA) President Jani Infantino said that the crisis caused by the emerging global corona virus could present an opportunity to restructure the popular game, which is expected to not return to rotation before May.

The ” Covid-19 ” epidemic, which claimed the lives of more than 15,000 people worldwide, imposed almost complete paralysis on all sporting activities and froze football competitions indefinitely.

The virus, which was imposed to combat the spread of widespread travel restrictions, led to the postponement of large dates that were scheduled this summer until next summer, most notably the European Cup and the Copa America Football Association, which also prompted FIFA to postpone the first version of the FIFA Club World Cup in its new form, which was He hopes to set it up in the summer of 2021, to a date he has not yet decided.

“We need to assess the global economic impact (…) We do not know when things can return to normal,” Infantino said in an interview published in the Italian newspaper

“Without causing a state of panic, to face it, we will play when we can play without that threatening anyone’s life … health comes first. Then all other things,” he added, stressing the need “to contemplate obtaining the best.” But we are also preparing for the worst. ”

But Infantino, who was re-elected this year for a second four-year term at the helm of FIFA, called for the current crisis to open the door for future research.

“Let’s look at the opportunities (available). We can possibly fix world football by going back a step back. With different formulas (for championships and competitions). Fewer rounds, maybe fewer teams, but more evenly. Fewer matches To keep the players healthy. ”

“This is not science fiction, to talk about this. Let’s determine the damage, see how it can be compensated, make sacrifices and start again (…) not from scratch, but we work together to save football from a crisis that threatens to be irreversible.”

In light of the uncertainty about a possible date for the return of the game’s competitions, especially the national championships and continental competitions, Infantino indicated that FIFA is considering the application of temporary exceptions regarding player contracts that expire on June 30, if this date is resolved and the seasons have not ended yet.

“Now we have to think about the schedule of national teams, temporary amendments and exemptions from the rules regarding the status of players and transfers (…) to protect contracts and localize the registration periods for players’ contracts,” he said, considering that steps of this kind may be harsh “but we have no choice. We all have. Make sacrifices. ”

Despite his talk about re-adjusting the competitions, Infantino renewed the refusal to establish a “Super League” between the major clubs in Europe, considering that such a proposal “raises my laugh (…) And what else? I see that others are planning from now and organizing competitions around the world, Outside the framework of organizational structures, and without any respect for the way football is organized locally, continental, and globally.
